Speak Up At School: Best Practices for Confronting Bias and Prejudice in School

Duration: 60 minutes

Grades: Suitable for Teachers. Can be modified for grades 6-12 students.

It’s happened to all of us: someone says something hurtful and we’re caught off guard. We don’t know what to do … so we do nothing. This program is based on work by one of our partners, Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance), and is designed to give you tools to address bigotry and harassment. We start with an introduction to bias and some of the ways it operates. Building on this foundation, we review and practice strategies to help us all speak up to bias and prejudice, whether subtle or overt, in our schools or communities.
